ORIGIN STORY

Years ago while living in the mountains of Italy, I watched a 14th-Century monastery transform into a lovely artists’ residence.

During demolition, the carpenters exposed a giant old growth beam from behind the plaster ceiling of the main building. They quickly cleaned and repositioned the beam to accent the parlor floor with a single brick at the center of the ceiling engraved with the date: 1347.

THE MOMENT

My time in Italy galvanized my appreciation for long-term durability in design.

Years later, when my wife and I had our hands dirty in the garden, we were disappointed by the pre-fabricated boxes on the market; they were affordable, but crumbled under the pressure of moist soil.

One day, I stepped backwards onto one of our original garden beds — and, it crushed beneath my boot like a Saltine™ cracker.

At that moment, I set out to make my own durable box, strong enough to bear the weight of a full grown gardener!

SIMPLE BOX

My aim was to create an elegant, yet durable wood box for planting long-term.

The basic Simple Box is fashioned from thick, untreated Douglas Fir lumber. With a drill press, I bore holes through the wood to secure each side with heavy, galvanized steel bolts, instead of screws, which I’ve seen give way under pressure.

I also use Cedar; the finest quality I can source. Western Red Cedar is far more resistant to insect damage and rot and has a shelf-life closer to 25-years with a premium price tag reserved for select designs.

Think, Outside.

I take pride in the simplicity and durability of the Simple Box, and I look forward to making them available locally, nationally, and internationally, one box at a time.
